Russian Poultry Unions Confirm: Chicken Egg and Meat Production Satisfies National Demand
Egg and meat production in Russia not only meets the domestic market’s needs but also fully covers the population’s demand. Meanwhile, selling prices for chicken are on a downward trend, industry union representatives reported to the press.
According to the Russian Federal Statistics Service (Rosstat), egg production in the first five months of 2024 reached 18.7 billion, marking a 2.6% decrease compared to the same period last year. May’s output contributed 4.1 billion eggs to this total, which is 3.2% less than in May of the previous year. While sales of major agricultural products such as grain, livestock, live-weight poultry, and milk have increased over the past five months, egg sales have not followed this trend. A total of 13.8 billion eggs were sold, which is 3.7% less than in the same period a year earlier, contrasting with an overall increase of 4.3% from January to May 2023.
“According to monitoring data from Rospticesoyuz, this year’s production of eggs and poultry meat has met the domestic market’s needs, with demand being fully satisfied. Poultry farms, which had suspended operations last year due to outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza, are now in the process of resuming their activities,” stated Galina Bobyleva, General Director of the Russian Poultry Union.
She also noted, referencing Rosstat data, that manufacturer prices for poultry meat have remained stable this year, while egg prices have decreased by 14% since the beginning of the year, reaching 85.09 rubles for 10 eggs in May. In June, prices fell by an additional 5-6% compared to May. “Consequently, the average manufacturer price for the first half of the year has been reduced by 8-10% from the beginning of the year,” reported Rosstat on Wednesday. During the week from July 25 to July 1, the price of chicken eggs in Russia dropped by 0.99%, cumulating to a 15.19% decrease since the beginning of 2024.
