Rosselkhoznadzor: Russian Grain Export Surge by 21% to 89 Million Tons in 2023/24 Season

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, Russian exports of grain products to global markets reached 89 million tons in the 2023/24 agricultural year, marking a 21% increase over the previous period. The Service cites data from the Argus-Phyto information system.

“During the 2023/24 agricultural season (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024), the territorial administrations of Rosselkhoznadzor issued phytosanitary certificates for the export of 89.3 million tons of unprocessed and refined grains. This represents a 21% increase from the 73.9 million tons recorded in the 2022-2023 agricultural year,” the service reports.

In terms of supply volume, barley leads with 9.46 million tons (a 67% increase), followed by corn at 7.7 million tons (up by 31%) and peas, which have doubled to 3.37 million tons. Flour exports have also seen a significant rise, reaching 1.274 million tons, a 60% increase.

Several products have shown substantial shipment growth compared to the previous season: oat shipments have doubled to 334,700 tons, rye has tripled to 231,500 tons, and buckwheat has also doubled, now at 222,5 tons. In the oilseed sector, both sunflower meal and mustard seed exports have seen increases, doubling to 148,400 tons and tripling to 136,300 tons, respectively.

India and Indonesia have significantly ramped up their imports of Russian grain this past season, with increases of 22-fold and 8-fold, respectively. Shipments to Tunisia and Bangladesh have tripled within the year, while exports to Yemen and China have surged by 60% and 57%. The UAE also saw a notable 55% growth in grain imports from Russia. Additionally, Brazil and Mexico’s purchases of Russian grain have risen by 43% and 39% compared to the previous year.

The Ministry of Agriculture estimates the grain export potential for the 2024/25 season at 60 million tons. Although the wheat export forecast is still pending, the previous season’s target for the global market was set to reach up to 70 million tons of grains, including 53 million tons of wheat.
