Russia has introduced a temporary ban on sugar exports

The Russian government has introduced a ban on the export of cane or beet sugar and chemically pure sucrose, which will be in effect until August 31, 2024, according to the Cabinet of Ministers’ Telegram channel.

The decision taken is aimed at maintaining the stability of the domestic food market, the message adds.

However, there are also some exceptions – it will be possible to supply certain volumes of sugar to the EAEU countries. Thus, the volume allowed for export to Armenia is 28 thousand tons, to Belarus — 5 thousand tons, to Kazakhstan — 120 thousand tons and to Kyrgyzstan — 28.5 thousand tons. The Ministry of Agriculture has been entrusted with distributing these volumes among participants in foreign trade activities.

In the current season, sugar production in Russia will amount to 6.8 million tons, 9.8% more than last season, according to the previously announced forecast of the Ministry. The positive dynamics of production is associated with a high sugar beet harvest, which, amounted to 53.1 million tons in 2023 and became the second in the history of the country, according to Rosstat. The Ministry estimated domestic sugar consumption at approximately 6 million tons.
